NEMA Assesses Flood Disaster Across Four LGAs in Sokoto State

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Sokoto Operations Office, in collaboration with the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), has conducted an assessment of the recent flood disaster that ravaged communities in Shagari, Tureta, Dange-Shuni, and Kebbe Local Government Areas of Sokoto State.

The flood, caused by a series of heavy rainstorms between 1st and 18th September 2025, left widespread destruction across the affected areas. The assessment team observed that many residential buildings—particularly those constructed with clay—were destroyed, with walls collapsed, rooftops blown off, and farmlands submerged.

The disaster also severely affected agricultural livelihoods as staple crops such as maize, millet, guinea corn, rice, groundnut, and onions were destroyed, raising concerns of food shortages for farming communities.

While some residents have begun partial renovations to sustain their families, others remain displaced and are currently seeking refuge with relatives and members of their host communities.

NEMA, in partnership with Sokoto SEMA, has assured continued collaboration with the Sokoto State Government, local authorities, and humanitarian stakeholders to mitigate the suffering of affected persons and provide timely relief assistance.
