The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has commended the Kano State Government for the successful launch of its Climate Change Policy and Program, describing it as a proactive step towards sustainable development and environmental resilience in Northern Nigeria.
The event, held on Tuesday, 29th July 2025, at Amani Event Centre along Audu Bako Way, Kano, brought together stakeholders from various sectors, including government agencies, development partners, academia, civil society, and community-based organizations.
Representing the Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, at the event, the North-West Zonal Director, Sani Lokoja Alhaji, lauded the Kano State Government for its visionary leadership. He noted that the policy lays a strategic foundation for tackling the increasing threats of climate-induced disasters such as flooding, drought, and extreme heat.
“This initiative provides a clear framework to harmonize efforts across institutions while reducing vulnerabilities at the grassroots,” Lokoja remarked during an interactive session with the Secretary to the State Government, who stood in for the Governor, and the Honourable Commissioner for Environment.
NEMA reaffirmed its readiness to partner with Kano State on early warning dissemination, disaster preparedness, and climate-adaptive strategies, especially in communities prone to environmental hazards.
The new policy is expected to serve as a model for other states. NEMA therefore urged governments at all levels to develop localized Climate Action Plans that prioritize risk prevention, resilience building, and sustainable development.
By launching the Climate Change Policy, Kano State has positioned itself at the forefront of climate-smart governance, sending a strong signal of its commitment to protecting lives, livelihoods, and the environment.
