Department of Search & Rescue
The Department of Search and Rescue (SAR) is charged with the responsibilities of prompt and efficient coordination of search and rescue activities during disasters. It also put in place adequate preparedness measures, towards effective and efficient management of disasters in the country.
The Department is responsible for the followings:
The Department is structured into two different divisions and a unit;
It is usually headed by a serving Senior Military Officer of not below the rank of a Colonel in the Army or its equivalent in the Air Force or Navy. At present, the Department is headed by a Group Captain.
Response & Recovery
The Federal Government through NEMA has a mandate to assist States and Local Governments in disaster response and recovery. Recovery personnel at the National Emergency Coordination Centre (NECC) in tune with this mandate are required to closely monitor response activities and to obtain valuable data regarding the severity and intensity of the event, the affected geographic area and the potential unsatisfied critical needs of the affected population.
