NEMA Supplies Relief Materials to Warri Victims
...a Victim Deliver in the Bush
The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency, AVM Mohammed Audu-Bida (rtd) has directed the movement of more relief materials from its Enugu Zonal offices to Warri South West Local Government Councils for the displaced people of the ongoing war on militants in Warri, Delta State after it established a camp at a primary school in Ogbe-Ijoh community to cater for the victims.
The agency which was commended by the community leaders for being the first federal government agency to reach the displaced and distressed people in the Niger-Delta also received a shock as a woman who was leaving her hideout to meet the officials of the agency delivered a baby in the bush.
In the assessment by the NEMA officials from Enugu, Port Harcourt and Abuja, 25 communities were affected which most of the 3000 displaced people are reluctant to move to the designated camp for fear of reprisal attacks. The agency is collaborating with the police, medical doctors and local government council in reaching the people.
Items to be supplied to the victims include bags of rice, beans, towels, mattresses, children wares, waxes, blankets.
The agency has been reaching out to the community leaders, government officials, youth leaders, women and children to assure them of government commitment to guarantee their safety and
NEMA is mandated by law to distribute emergency materials to victims of natural or other disasters and assist in the rehabilitation of the victims while it liaises with State Emergency Management Committees to assess and monitor the distribution of relief. It also coordinates the activities of all voluntary organisations engaged in emergency relief operations in any part of the federation.
